Gunka (軍歌?) is the Japanese term for war music. It applies both to Japanese songs and foreign songs such as Battle Hymn of the Republic. A famous example of Japanese Gunka was the song 'Senyuu' written during the Russo-Japanese war.
Up until the surrender of the wartime Japanese government in 1945, gunka was taught in Japanese schools to inspire patriotism and rally children against Japan's enemies.
