[edit] Merri Creek and Edible Plants

G'day Gumboot,

Firstly, welcome to wikipedia, and thanks for your contributions so far. Your updates to the Merri Creek are very much appreciated! In fact, your changes to this article is the reason why I'm contacting you.

I'll admit that I have a strong interest in bushfoods. Any mention of edible plants along the Merri Creek are likely to be from my edits. The creek is quite significant in the diversity of edible plants that it supports, and the concentration at which it supports them.

In a recent edit you recorded a comment stating:

Would also like to change edible plants section as most of these are weed species.

It's certainly true that most wild edible plants in urban areas are considered to be 'weeds', although many of them were intentionally introduced to Australia due to their nutritional qualities and ease-of-growth. There's little doubt that these are invasive species that have colonised the creek, although a number of native edibles can also be found.

The collection of wild plants from the Merri Creek and other areas is common in some social groups. I've regularly seen people collecting wild brassicas from the creek. The stands of jerusalem artichoke are particularly noteworthy, due to their significant size, and the likelyhood that they were intentionally planted.

I'm curious as to what changes you'd like to see to the edible plants section. I had simply jotted down a few species from my own notes. Certainly there's a lot more than can be said, especially as the creek habours species such as amaranth and kangaroo apple that are otherwise rare in the surrounding areas.

All the very best,
