Gullah Gullah Island (December 1, 1994-January 1, 1998) was a children's television series created by Ron Daise and his wife Natalie. It was shown on Nick Jr., and it was the first show designed for preschoolers to feature a Gullah family. The show stars Ron Daise and Natalie Eldridge with their children Simeon and Sara. Ron and Natalie are accompanied by three children (Simeon, Shaina, and James), their niece (Vanessa), and a frog named Binyah Binyah Pollywog. The family lived on a fictional island off the coast of South Carolina. The island was actually Beaufort SC and Saint Helena Island.) The Downtown area was featured in one episode when the family took a trip to Charleston, South Carolina.
TV Guide selected Gullah Gullah Island as one of their top ten children's television shows in 1996. The show had relatively high ratings during its daytime run in the 1990s.
The show was taped at Nickelodeon Studios in Universal Studios Florida, in fact the show Clarissa Explains It All was also shot on the same set (interior and exterior). Modifications were made, like adding various shades of red to the home in Gullah Gullah. The backyard was used on earlier episodes of All That as well.
Their adventures feature singing, dancing, learning, and encouraging children in the audience to think about things like healthy eating, telling the truth, and problem solving. The show ran for four seasons starting in 1994. It continued to air in reruns and on Noggin until 2004. On Sunday, October 28, 2007, Noggin announced their 24/7 schedule to debut on December 31, 2007, and "Gullah Gullah Island" was placed on the new schedule at 4AM and 4:30PM Eastern time.
