I came from a place called Tuatapere, which is about 100 Km west of Invercargill, which was the southernmost city of the British Empire. Located on the banks of the lower Waiau River which drains Lake Manapouri, Tuatapere was noted for it's farming and timber (lumber) industries. Originally marketed at the "Sportsman's Paridise" and the "Gateway to Fjordland", it is now marketed as the "Sausage Capital of New Zealand". Due to the buoyant post World War 2 economy when the price for exported wool was high (one pound by weight of wool was worth one New Zealand Pound in currency) the town flourished in the late 1950's and early 1960's; but as the years have passed its economy and employment have declined.
