A modern guitar and a replica of a Renaissance lute.
The guitar was a mid-70s vintage Kaman Ovation 1612-4 Acoustic Electric Guitar.
The lute is a replica of a lute by Hans Frei, which is now exhibit C34 (changed to SAM 34?) in the Sammlung alter Musikinstrumente (Collection of Ancient Musical Instruments) at the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien (Vienna Museum of Art History). The replica was made by Lawrence K. Brown, Luthier of Asheville, North Carolina, in 1999, based on published diagrams of the museum piece. (During the Baroque era the Frei lute was upgraded by replacing the original neck and pegbox with more modern components. The replica is a reconstruction of the original Renaissance form of the instrument.)
The photo is a low-quality Polaroid image that I took shortly after receiving the lute. I used The GIM to sharpen the image somewhat. (If you are a graphics guru and would like to do a better job of enhancement, drop me a line and I'll send you the original scan of the photo to work from.)
