Guilherme Franco
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Guilherme Franco born November 25th 1946 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, is a percussionist in the jazz and World fusion music genres.
He has recorded on the albums of many jazz performers such as McCoy Tyner, Lonnie Liston Smith and Woody Shaw. He was a member of Keith Jarrett's "American Band" from 1974 to 1975 and Paul Winter's Paul Winter Consort in the 1980s. [1]
He started a samba school and power samba group in NYC circa 1981 called Pe De Boi. A Brazilian slang term for a good musician, literally meaning, "foot of the bull".
As a result he began playing many gigs in the NYC underground scene of the 1980s with the likes of David Byrne and David Johansen among many others.
Guilherme has recently been hired by longtime friend, drummer and movie executive Richard Baratta to work in the motion picture industry in New York, which is great because there is little work for percussionists in NYC.
[edit] Discography
He recorded a solo album as a leader, Capoeira: Legendary Music of Brazil, (1998) on the Lyrichord label where he plays the majority of the instruments heard.
