Talk:Guess value

[edit] Page subject

This page is an interesting little blog entry, but what's its topic? The article title right now is "Guess value", but the text talks about all sorts of stuff unrelated to initial values. (And if they're more properly called "initial values", why isn't the page there?) I suspect that this page's contents would find a better home at Iterative algorithm, and this page should be deleted (since nobody uses the phrase "guess value", nobody would search for it expecting to find anything). --Quuxplusone 00:38, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

I also strongly object to the title "Guess value". The topic should be about estimating values which can be usues as initial values in paraneter determination problems such as nonlinear least squares and nonlinear regression. These values are obtained by anything other than guesswork. For example, simulation methods are used in determination of equilibrium constants as well as reference to database of previously determined related values. Simulation is not mentioned at all, but it one of the most useful methods as it can often be easily implemented in a spreadsheet.

There is a brief section on parameter estimation in non-linear least squares. This topic would be worth keeping as it relates to optimization problems in general, but it needs a serious clean-up. Petergans (talk) 10:27, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
