[edit] Authority for Cercopithecus?

Who named the genus Cercopithecus? This article and ITIS both say "Linnaeus, 1758" [1]. However, I find that a bit implausible since

  1. in the 10th edition of Systema Naturae Linnaeus put all the monkeys in Simia;
  2. if he named the genus you would have expected him to place a species in it, but none of the species currently in Cercopithecus was placed there by Linnaeus
  3. the type species was originally Simia diana

So there's a puzzle here. Gdr 13:29:37, 2005-08-05 (UTC)

Linnaeus named it as a group within Simia in SN 10. See Wikispecies which comes from Groves. - UtherSRG (talk) 13:57, August 5, 2005 (UTC)
Yes. Simia was suppressed by Opinion 114 of the ICZN, S. diana Linnaeus was designated the type in 1926. Ucucha|... 14:30, 5 August 2005 (UTC)
