As of 2001 India census[2], Gudalur had a population of 35,442. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Gudalur has an average literacy rate of 60%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 70%, and female literacy is 50%. In Gudalur, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Gudalur is enroute to Thekkady from Madurai. Distance to Madurai is 118 km.
