It was my understanding that the Guardian was born of the evil that the Hero left behind when he became the Avatar, although I'm not certain what the source of that might be. (Unsigned comment from 204.39.210.240, Sep 26 2005 11:46)

That is true, at least if you believe the explanation given in Ultima IX. However, if you believe the other games, a few facts immediately spring in mind: the Guardian has been conquering worlds left and right, seemingly completely unaware of Avatar, and secondly, he has been doing it quite a long time, certainly longer than Avatar became what he is. Most obvious example: U7 Silver Seed, which is set, I think, either before U1 or between U1 and U2 (I'm not so sure...) and features people who talk about the Guardian... I believe there's more nitpicking on this topic in Hacki's site but I'm too tired to check it. --Wwwwolf 02:40, 28 September 2005 (UTC)

Wrong. Ultima 7 Silver Seed is set... guess what? On Ultima 7! During The Black Gate, to be exact. It says nothing about The Guardian: The plot surrounds the Exodus remains (from Ultima 3), who's influence start to cause havoc to Britania again. Fans simply think there wasn't much time for the Guardian to conquer so many dimensions, but don't forget it was stated many times through the series the time passes differently in each dimension. I removed all false and suppositions statements from the article. SSPecter Talk|E-Mail 04:24, 11 March 2008 (UTC).

I've tried to square the two explanations, and the only thing I could ever think of was that the Guardian was the dark side of all the Avatars combined. In the other games you hear how many worlds have developed an Avatar (i.e. Mors Gotha from Keldorn Keep). The Avatar in the games is just the most significant one in the multiverse. But that's just my pet theory. Joylock 21:39, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Male?

"the character is now gender-specific" Well, as i remember at ultima VII we could choose in the begining. So the charavter lose the gender when send to Pagan? I think i dont agree with this. --R2cyberpunk 02:32, 1 April 2006 (UTC)

The Avatar became gender-specific in Ultima 8 because the number of frames used to animate the Avatar was already upwards of 1400. In Ultima 7, the animation was a simple two or three-frame loop, but in Ultima 8, the Avatar is much more detailed and to make two 'versions' of the character would have effectively doubled the number of animations needed, to no real purpose. [edit] Appearance in Ultima Underworld I

The Guardian also appears in Uw1 known as "The Slasher of Veils". This occurs before VII part 1 and is his first appearance. He is held prisoner in the volcano in the bottom of the Stygian Abyss by an enchantment laid down by brother wizards Tyball and Garamon. It is the Avatar's duty to collect the talismans of Sir Cabirus and throw them into the volcano to banish the Guardian back to his own dimension.

The "The Slasher of Veils" is a trapped powerful demon who has nothing to do with the Guardian. He is, in fact, defeated by the Avatar at the end of the game. SSPecter Talk|E-Mail 04:24, 11 March 2008 (UTC).
