Guatemalan Christian Democracy

The Guatemalan Christian Democracy (Democracia Cristiana Guatemalteca), founded 24 August 1955, is a political party in Guatemala.
President Vinicio Cerezo (1986–1991) was elected on a DCG ticket. The DGC was also a leading player in the National Opposition Front that fought the 1974 presidential election with Efraín Ríos Montt as its candidate; however, the legality of that election, in which Ríos Montt lost to Kjell Laugerud García, remains a matter of dispute.[1]
[edit] 2003 election
In the legislative elections held on 9 November 2003, the party won 3.2% of the popular vote and 1 out of 158 seats in Congress. Its presidential candidate Jacobo Arbenz Vilanova (son of former president Jacobo Arbenz Guzmán) won 1.6% in the presidential elections of the same day.
[edit] 2007 election
In the legislative elections held on 9 September 2007, the DGC secured 26,190 votes (0.83% of the total) in the race for national-list deputies and, save for defections, will have no representation in the 2008-12 Congress. In the presidential election held on the same day, its candidate Vinicio Cerezo Blandón (Cerezo Arévalo's son) received 16,529 votes (0.50%).
Having failed to secure the minimum of 5% of the popular vote or one seat in Congress, the DGC will forfeit its registration as a party.[2]
