Founded in 1938, Guangxi Arts Institute (GXAI) is located in the heart of downtown Nanning City, the capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, which has won the China Habitat Environment Award and the Owner of UN Habitat Scroll of Honor for the city’s modern outlook and pleasant weather. As the permanent site of the China-ASEAN Expo, it attracts to the great event hundreds of thousands of guests from across the world, especially from Southeast Asia. Bordered by the picturesque Nanhu Lake, it occupies an area of 107,400 square meters. With its both campuses of Nanning Campus and Guilin Campus, it is one of the six provincial comprehensive arts institutions of higher learning in China and the only comprehensive arts institute in Guangxi. The Institute has eight colleges and a Middle School, namely College of Fine Arts, College of Design, Guilin Academy of Chinese Painting, College of Music, College of Music Education, College of Dance, College of Humanities and College of Film & Television as well as the Affiliated Middle School. Guangxi Arts Institute offers 13 undergraduate programs in fine arts, painting, sculpture, advertisement, animation, art design, musicology, composition and composition theories, dance, dance choreography, dance performance, broadcasting and anchoring with 42 majors. It is authorized to confer master degrees in musicology, fine arts and design with 42 directions. The president is Mr. Huang Gesheng, a famous Chinese painting artist. The Institute has a faculty of 418, of whom 37 are professors, 104 associate professors and 79 supervisors of master candidates. The well-equipped teaching facilities includes painting studios, piano rooms, concert hall, rehearsal hall, multi-media classroom, computer classrooms, specialized labs, teaching studios, computer music studios. Its provincial key research bases of Guangxi Ethnic Minority Traditional Arts Research Center, Lijiang Painting Style Research Center, Comic and Animation Research Center provides excellent places for teaching and practice. Inheriting the tradition, based on local resources, backed by advantageous geography and resourceful ethnic and folk art, the Institute carries out the personalized arts education with distinct local and ethnic features, achieving outstanding results. The Lijiang Painting Style, with President Huang Gesheng as its chairman and art faculties as its main members exerts profound influence at home and abroad. Its long history, complete disciplines, strong faculty, abundant school running experiences, advantageous teaching facilities, art education with unique ethnic minority characteristics enable it to rank in the front row among the art colleges of the same kind nationwide. In the national undergraduate Education Level Evaluation carried out by the Ministry of Education, GAI was awarded the Excellent Grade. It has co-operations and cultural exchanges with art institutions in Thailand and Vietnam. The friendly co-operative relationship links it with many universities in the U.S., Russia, Canada, Ukraine. The delegations have been invited to perform, exchange, research in Thailand, the U.S., U.K., Japan, Vietnam.
