The Guadalajara International Film Festival is a film festival based in the Mexican city of Guadalajara, this festival is considered the most prestigious film festival in Latinamerica and the most important Spanish language film festival in the world,[1] during a week the festival is the premier showcase for new work from Mexican and international independent filmmakers, the Guadalajara International Film Festival is a promoter of Mexico's and Ibero-America's recent independent film productions also recognizes the importance of opening new doors for national and Iberamerican cinema, increasing the awareness of world film industry by screening the work of noteworthy Ibero-American film directors and presenting other remarkable and innovative films by newcoming filmmakers.

The presence in Guadalajara of delegates from other important festivals from around the world has helped Mexican film to have a strong international presence in the last twenty years,[2] the Festival has also helped to revitalize the careers of some older more established Mexican and English speaking artists like Arturo Ripstein, Gabriel Figueroa, María Félix, Jaime Humberto Hermosillo, Silvia Pinal, Ignacio López Tarso, Ana Ofelia Murguía, Felipe Cazals, Jorge Fons, Katy Jurado, and Ismael Rodríguez as well as many others.[3] The festivals contains a ceremony awards composed by an international jury who grants the "Mayahuel" award to the articipating films.
