Did it strike anyone else that the word sambo is not acceptable? Yes. It is not an acceptable word, but, unfortunately, it was the usage at that time to describe what was then referred to as a Negro--rather than an African or Black person. What surprises me is that there is no mention of the fact that 'gueridon' is used today commonly in fine dining restaurants as a service table brought into the dining (or sitting in the dining room) to deliver food to the table from the kitchen.
