[edit] Stubstuff
[edit] Unprotection request
Posted here and at WP:RUP I would like to request unprotection for Template:Kosovo-stub, as there are sure to be and are several stub articles related to the topic. The rationale given for protection is "[R]epeated recreation of deleted stub type. Expiry should ideally be upon Kosovo gaining UN-recognised independence." Since Kosovo will never gain UN-recognized independence (thanks to Russia), this criterion is irrelevant. Furthermore, there are several stub type for non-UN territories (e.g. Template:Palestine-stub); why a double standard? Also, it is not POV to have a stub type for Kosovo anymore than it is to have Template:Alabama-stub. If someone wants to believe that Kosovo is simply a distinct part of Serbia with its own stub type, that's fine. If someone wants to believe that Kosovo is an independent state, that is also fine. Consequently, I see a reason for the stub type (need) and no reason to stop its creation (consistency, etc.) -Justin (koavf)·T·C·M 22:19, 16 February 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks It makes sense that someone has already been discussing this, but I figured I would put in my two cents. My statement about Palestine still stands, though: UN recognition is irrelevant and impossible. -Justin (koavf)·T·C·M 23:36, 16 February 2008 (UTC)
- Flood? Well, there is a Template:Transnistria-stub, but right... -Justin (koavf)·T·C·M 00:15, 17 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Substing writer-stub on WP:STUB
Actually, you didn't need to that as writer-stub is one of the stubs that uses the asbox template. Those asbox stubs only add the stub category if they are added to a mainspace article. Caerwine Caer’s whines 23:07, 16 February 2008 (UTC)
- Um... not any more, it doesn't. Grutness...wha?
- That's because you de-asboxed it. You also messed up the inter-wiki links when you did whatever you did. Caerwine Caer’s whines 00:24, 17 February 2008 (UTC)
- I de-asboxed and any others I come across like it, per discussions on asbox last year at WP:WSS. As for messing with the interwiki links, they were fine on my computer when I saved it. bet it's yet more problems with non-Latin characters. Yet again. If I complain one more time about the problems with that, I bet i'll get the same reply as every time in the past ("We're working on it - should be fixed soon" - "soon" seems to be something in the order of 2+ years...) Grutness...wha?
- Which discussions? The last discussion I saw was that while we weren't going to mass convert the templates to use it, we weren't going to de-asbox existing stub templates using it either. Caerwine Caer’s whines 00:35, 17 February 2008 (UTC)
- I see there was a brief mention of doing away with asbox in a seemingly unrelated discussion. I can't say that's sufficient to decommission it myself. In particular what problem are you seeing with asbox, because frankly I have seen none. (Of course, I haven't tried to do anything tricky with it.) Caerwine Caer’s whines 00:44, 17 February 2008 (UTC)
- Mmmm. Now that you mention it, not that many problems, recently at least. I've only removed it from four or five stub templates (I was sure the overall opinion was that it was causing problems!) - I won't take it off any others. Grutness...wha? 00:58, 17 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Regarding japan-baseball-stub
Hi Grutness. I didn't mean any harm against the project by creating {{japan-baseball-stub}}, I was simply trying to help myself out a bit when I was creating new articles. My main focus right now is on Japanese baseball and there is a lot of missing articles which is the reason I created it, knowing I was going to create at least several stubs relating to baseball in Japan in the coming weeks.
I was thinking of my own project I'm involved with (WP:BASEBALL) and stub-sorting didn't even cross my mind. I took the liberty of placing it all in the right categories, I just didn't leave a message on the stub-sorting page. I don't think I've broken any rules either, I was merely trying to help the project by getting it more organised (for myself as well) relating to baseball in Japan. Didn't mean any harm by it.
My main reasoning as well is, Japanese baseball articles are not appropriate for the mainstream baseball-stub categories, seeing as they are dominated by Major League Baseball, or baseball in North America.--Borgardetalk 14:16, 21 February 2008 (UTC)
- Hey again, I think what you are saying is alright. I've left a message here if you would like to comment.--Borgardetalk 07:46, 22 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Category:Kosovo geography stubs
This concerns some 30 stubs.[1] Accommodating them was the reason I created the category. I find it extraordinary bad judgement on your part to delete a category that we'll end up having anyway, orphaning 30 stub articles in the process. dab (𒁳) 23:58, 29 February 2008 (UTC)
- No-one's orphaned anything. The 30 stubs are back where they belong, exactly where they were before. The threshold for separate stub categories is 60 stubs, and if and when there are 60 stubs on this subject, they'll get a separate category. Until that time, they stay upmerged, exactly the same as the geography stubs for other countries with fewer than 60 geo-stubs. this is standard practice, as explained at WP:WSS and WP:STUB. Good judgement might well have involved checking that before re-creating a previously deleted category. Grutness...wha? 11:27, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Robert Lawson (architect)
Robert Lawson (architect) has been nominated for a featured article review. Articles are typically reviewed for two weeks. Please leave your comments and help us to return the article to featured quality. If concerns are not addressed during the review period, articles are moved onto the Featured Article Removal Candidates list for a further period, where editors may declare "Keep" or "Remove" the article from featured status. The instructions for the review process are here. Reviewers' concerns are here. SilkTork *SilkyTalk 09:23, 1 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Betacommand: Part Deux
Betacommand acted a bit hastily with respect to my suggestion of how to accommodate his desire to have the expanding it link in stub templates be something he could ignore while engaged in his quest to rid Wikipedia of internal external links. Just thought you ought to be aware of it as an admin associated with this project. My kludge does work (for now), but if the dev's ever use the fake URL parameter "stub" as real URL parameter, it'll cause some havoc. Shouldn't cause any immediate problems. Caerwine Caer’s whines 23:46, 1 January 2008 (UTC)
- As per your suggestion, I left a note for Alai, but not Valentinian, as it appears that he has at the least gone on an extended wikibreak and blanked his user and talk pages before he left. Caerwine Caer’s whines 00:48, 2 January 2008 (UTC)::Mm. That's a shame. Hope V comes back soon. Grutness...wha? 00:54, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Lundycoin.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Lundycoin.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 21:27, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
- Sorry, but I have no intention of fighting this one. Seems that every image I upload claiming fair use - even those where the fair use I claim is identical to example templates shown for what is regarded as fair use - sooner or later gets someone coming along and claiming that it is not fair use. I've even had someone come along and saying that the gfdl-self template i put on a photo i had taken of a painting I painted wasn't eligible for gfdl. Until someone tidies up the legalistic morass that seems to disallow any form of rationale as being acceptable for fair use, there's no point in trying to overturn such judgements. Wikipedia is considerably poorer for it, but that's just the way it is. Grutness...wha? 22:57, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
- I understand and agree with your decision. A picture is worth a thousand words, but the example case I tried fighting - and won - took more than a thousand words, so I'm poorer for the experience.-gadfium 08:10, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
- I sympathise too, James. There are just too many muppets that do not understand what legally constitutes fair use in the Florida jurisdiction. Alice✉ 09:13, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
- Cheers to both of you. FWIW, in this particular case I followed the example template for coinage and also added that the coin the photo was of was not issued by a government and had never been legal tender (making it even less likely to fall foul of any copyright problems - see Coins of Lundy if you're interested in the details). But no, still not good enough apparently :/ Grutness...wha?
- Incidentally, it's now de-tagged - since the only page to use it is a discussion of the image itself, it patently qualifies for fair use. As I think most people who watch me know, my opinions of BCB's "kill them all & let God sort them out" approach is not high. — iridescent 21:25, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Media coverage of Wikipedia in New Zealand
Hi Grutness. You're a writer for a newspaper and an admin here, so you're the ideal person to ask about this. I don't follow the news much myself, so I'm not sure exactly how much coverage Wikipedia has had in New Zealand, but I've never read a Herald article or seen a news story on it, despite hearing about Trademe all the time. Has there been any such coverage? I was thinking we at the New Zealand project could try to get some sort of story on Wikipedia arranged so as to give it a bit more public attention. Something like a story on Close Up for example. What do you think? Richard001 (talk) 22:03, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Reversion at Pavlova
Your reversion of the {{fact}} tag corrupted the interwiki links at the bottom of the page (diff, note changes are indicated to interwiki links). Please check your browser for proper Help:Multilingual support, to avoid such corruption in the future. (I also remarked on the reason I added the fact tag on the article talk page.) —DragonHawk (talk|hist) 00:06, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
- I have done so - on numerous occasions. I have also followed the instructions on how to avoid this. Frequently. I've brought it up several times at the Village Pump. I've spoken to the developers and olther techies about it. They informed me that it was a problem with WP itself, and would be fixed "soon". That was over two years ago. Since then, I've spoken to them several times with the same response. Usually I catch it when it happens, and luckily it is only an intermittent fault. unfortunately, on this occasion, it slipped through without me noticing it. Grutness...wha? 00:42, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
- Ah. An intermittent bug, in existence for years, that causes easy-to-miss corruption. How nice. Sigh. Oh, well, nothing more we can do, then. Thanks anyway. —DragonHawk (talk|hist) 01:53, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Collapsible tables in Safari
If you are willing to try something (and willing to trust me), please copy the code at User:Anomie/Sandbox.js into the bottom of your User:Grutness/monobook.js. The code there attempts to replace the function in question with a version that will hopefully work in Safari; if it does, we can put the {{editprotected}} onto MediaWiki talk:Common.js without any more fuss, and if not it could at least prove me wrong ;) It will also change the Wikipedia logo in the upper-left to have a red background to indicate that it is working.
If you don't want to trust me I completely understand. Anomie⚔ 04:18, 19 January 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Anomie - your monobook work seems to have done the trick - for which many thanks. I'm seeing everything fine at Talk:Algeria now. Haven't tried any other similar pages, but I assume if it works for one it should work for all of them. Don't like the red background on the WP logo, though... will it cause any problems if I remove the
document.getElementById('p-logo').style.background='red'; document.getElementById('p-logo').style.border='5px solid red';"
line in my monobook.js? Grutness...wha? 06:34, 19 January 2008 (UTC)

- Ok, I had a bug in the code. Would you try the new version at User:Anomie/Sandbox.js? I have a test page now at User:Anomie/Sandbox3 for testing the nested tables that caused the problem last time. Anomie⚔ 15:36, 19 January 2008 (UTC)
Unfortunately no, the new version doesn't work - the thin lines are back. :( Grutness...wha? 23:07, 19 January 2008 (UTC)

- I followed the instructions on that page word for word - as I did with all the other cases where it hass been decreed by you (and seemingly you alone) that this usage is not fair. Methinks you are taking the name of "Template: No fair" too literally. Again. Grutness...wha? 06:09, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

We also sang that song at School. I think it is from a piece called 'The Story of Lieutenant Cockatoo' by Ronald Eyre and Phyllis Tate, the British composer. Hi, Grutness, thanks for voting in my RfA, which passed with 47 supports (I hoped for a perfect square, but two away is close enough!), 3 opposes (the first odd prime), and 0 neutrals. I'm glad the community has decided to trust me with the mop and bucket (the flamethrower isn't supported). Of course, special thanks goes to my nominators Auawise and that one guy who buried stuff (not that the thanks I give to the you isn't special!). [edit] Request for a copy of a deleted article
Hi, Grutness.
I had an article told me before that a deleted article can be retrieved by a friendly admin. Can you do that and get me a copy? I'd like to edit it in my sandbox, address the notability issue and replace it. If it gets eventually deleted after a discussion on the merits, I'm fine with that, but this was way unilateral.
that I wrote last night deleted out from under me based on a claim of non-notability. This is frustrating, I've lost all the work. You'veGheezh, I know there's "speedy deletion," but it's pretty absurd to delete something just a few hours after it's created, advising the creator that he can use the {{hangon}} template, but deleting it anyway so that's not possible. And this was deleted overnight. There was never any chance to respond.
If this is the practice, what's the point of the hangon template? TJRC (talk) 18:25, 21 February 2008 (UTC)
- Hey, thanks for the quick response. I feel a little less grumpy now. TJRC (talk) 21:53, 21 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] AfD nomination of B.net
An article that you have been involved in editing, B.net, has been listed for deletion. If you are interested in the deletion discussion, please participate by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/B.net.
Your edit was fairly minor[2] but since you may be familiar with radio in NZ, your input at the deletion discussion would be helpful, especially if you can find a reliable source meeting the requirements of our Notability Guideline. I checked a while back myself and couldn't find anything. Thanks, --A. B. (talk) 13:32, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
