Grover Underwood is one of the main characters in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series by Rick Riordan. He is a satyr, a mythological Greek being that is half goat-half human. He has the upper-body of a human, and the legs and horns of a goat. His horns are usually hidden by his curly brown hair (although they do grow too tall for him to hide them)or sometimes a red rasta cap. Although he is 28, he's at the mental age of about 14 because satyrs mature half as fast as humans do.

[edit] Character History

Grover is the best friend of Percy, with whom he has an empathy link, meaning if one of the two dies, then the other will probably die too (or permanently be left in a vegetative state.) However, having one means one can send messages to the other through dreams. He met him when he went undercover as a disabled child (one with a leg disorder. He seems to have this due to the fake feet he wears when needing to appear human) to find out if Percy was a half-blood. Percy does not find out that Grover is a satyr until his trip with his mother when he goes to Montauk, New York and gets attacked by a Minotaur.

Grover is shown to be a bit scared, getting afraid easily. When this happens his eyes turn to slits like a goat's. But he always tries to defend his friends and is very loyal. He also can cope with dangerous situations fairly well (like when he was kidnapped by a Cyclops).

Grover has many powers. This includes being able to make magical music with his pipes which can make things grow, find paths and do numerous other things (although he can only do a few modern songs). He can also smell monsters (unless he’s underground, which always smells like monsters) and talk to animals. As a result of his meeting with Pan, he can also use the power of Panic.

Being a satyr Grover loves nature and Hunters very much and hates pollution. In the third book, it is revealed he has a huge crush on Artemis, the goddess of the hunt. ("She's so...into nature.") We also find out from Juniper, Grover's girlfriend, that he once had a crush on a blueberry bush. He often helps out animals (such as when he Annabeth Chase and Percy Jackson [his best friends] find some being treated badly). At the end of the first book Grover sets off to find Pan, God of nature who disappeared centuries ago. All satyrs believe he is still alive, and wish to bring him back to restore nature to the way it was.

In the Titan's Curse, Grover was involved in several situations where Pan (God of the Wild) has spoken to him. The first was in New Mexico, where the presence of Pan made the birds on Grover's coffee cup and a rubber rat come to life, also bringing a wild boar to help Percy, Thalia, Grover, Bianca and Zoe escape the skeletal army. The second incident happened when Grover was alone. Pan spoke to him, saying: "I await you." Both times, Grover was drinking coffee, so he and the other satyrs believe this had something to do with Pan's appearance.(To Percy's disbelief)

In The Battle of the Labyrinth, Grover is revealed to have a girlfriend, a dryad named Juniper. He has angered the elder council of satyrs by proclaiming that he has heard Pan. They warn him that if he does not find the god in a week, his searcher's license will be revoked. He accompanies Percy, Tyson, and Annabeth into the Labyrinth. He finally discovers Pan and passes on his message that he has died. He also faces his fear of Cyclopes, or more so Tyson. In the climactic Battle of the Labyrinth, Grover unleashes a horrible scream of "pure fear" known as Panic that Pan was said to have possessed, and drives the attacking monsters away from Camp Half-Blood.
