Ground lift

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The ground lift switch on audio equipment disconnects pin 1 on the XLR jack. Pin 1 on XLR cables is connected to the braid or foil shield in the cable, and acts as the ground point of the circuit. Disconnecting the audio equipment (preamp, etc.) from the shield can prevent unwanted hum or current from flowing between the two devices. This helps prevent the creation of ground loops from forming between equipment, for example in cases of floating ground equipment. It should be noted that ground lifts do not conform to Audio Engineering Society standard AES48.
