GroundReport is a citizen journalism platform that shares revenues with contributors. Community members rate content to determine what makes the front page and protect their work with a range of Creative Commons licenses[1]. The New York-based company was founded by Rachel Sterne in 2006.
GroundReport updates daily, and presently features 20,000 on-the-ground news reports by 2,000 international contributors from areas of conflict. A mission-based for-profit company, GroundReport strives to democratize the media by enabling broad, meaningful participation.
GroundReport accepts news submissions in text, image and video formats. GroundReport's video has been featured on the Huffington Post and Salon.com. Content from GroundReport is available via a premium widget compatible with Netvibes, iGoogle, Apple dashboard, and Microsoft Vista.
All GroundReport contributors receive automatic monthly payments via PayPal based on the unique traffic to their posts.
In July 2007 GroundReport launched GroundReport TV, its live streaming video news channel. GRTV has covered live events including the iPhone launch[2], NY Tech Meetup [3]and Aspen Institute Forum on Communications and Society [4]. According to CNET, GroundReport is developing a Facebook application [5]. In September 2007 founder Rachel Sterne was named an Architect of the Future by the Waldzell Institute; Ms. Sterne has also spoken at Digital Hollywood, Jeff Jarvis' Networked Journalism Summit, NBC Universal, Columbia University and New York University[6]. She co-founded the New York Citizen Journalism Meetup, which has over 100 members.
