Groclant
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Groclant is the name of a phantom island generally shown off the western side of Greenland, first appearing on maps in the late 1500s.
It may be due to erroneous reading of the name of Greenland from a map (it was sometimes labeled Groẽnland), or it may refer to Baffin Island or other islands in the Canadian Nunavut region. This area of the Atlantic was heavily explored soon afterwards, and Groclant quickly disappeared from maps.
One of the first maps to show it was a Mercator map from 1569, and one of the last to show it was a Quadus map of 1608.
