IMDb profile

Grizzly Rage (aka Off Road) is a 2007 horror movie filmed in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. It is one of ten original movies RHI Entertainment contracted to produce for the SCI FI Channel.[1] It was also released in Canada under the name Off Road.

Featuring a very small cast, Grizzly Rage follows four teenagers who break into a restricted forest to celebrate their graduation, only to have their adventure turn to terror when they accidentally kill a bear cub sending its 1600 pound mother into a homicidal rage. As they try to get out and get help, the furious bear relentlessly hunts them down.

Grizzly Rage is unusual for a Sci Fi horror movie in that the bear used is a real, normal grizzly of standard size.[2] Despite a mild hint that the area is contaminated by toxic waste, the bear never displays any abnormal features to suggest it is mutated. Its relentless rage and pursuit of its cub's killers is plausible given the documented intelligence of a bear and its ability to track game for miles. Its ability to destroy the land rover and rip up a door are well within the bounds of a grizzly bear's strength and weight, particular an enraged one.[3]

[edit] Plot

Four college friends, Shaun, Ritch, Wes, and Lauren, decide to celebrate their graduation by breaking into Saranoc Grotto, a forest heavily marked with no trespassing signs and a huge fence. They break in and go speeding down a dirt road. The impact knocks their Jeep Cheokee 4x4 off the road and into a tree, cracking the radiator. They go to the road to discover that they hit a Grizzly bear cub, which died. As they argue over burying it, they hear its mother coming and they run. They manage to get the Jeep started, but the engine overheats and it breaks down again quickly. Wes and Ritch grab some water bottles and head into the forest to refill it while the other two wait at the car. While searching, Ritch discovers a large pond contaminated with toxic chemicals. While filling his water bottle, Ritch hears something and runs in terror, yelling at Wes to run as well. The bear finds Ritch and attacks him. Wes stumbles on them and the bear attacks him as well. The other two hear the screaming and run from the car. They are able to save Wes and flee while listening to Ritch's screams as the bear kills him.

They make it back to the car and get it started again, speeding off. Wes tries to get Shaun to turn around to go back for Ritch, and fight over the wheel, sending the car crashing over a rocky cliff. Wes suggests staying with the car and waiting for help, but Lauren points out that everyone thinks they went somewhere else and that no one will look for them there. They manage to winch the Jeep up to the road, but they aren't able to get it started because the battery dies.

Shaun and Wes decide that one of them has to jog the 15 kilometers out of the forest to get help. Wes volunteers, but Shaun decides to go instead because he's faster and has a better sense of direction. Before he leaves, Wes gives him the usual advice for what to do if he runs into a bear: stay calm, talk to it softly, don't look it in the eye, try to back away slowly, and if it charges, drop into a fetal position and pretend to be dead. He heads off, leaving Wes and Lauren to wait by the Jeep.

Shaun eventually comes to some run down buildings in the forest with a padlock on the front door. When no one answers his calls, he breaks into one and discovers parts of dead animals, a bear trap, and other hunting paraphernalia. He leaves the cabin and explores a barn-like area where he finds a lot of dead chickens. As he leaves that area, the bear appears. He tries to sneak away, but he ends up running right into her. She throws him onto to the roof of the chicken coop where he falls through.

Somehow Shaun makes it back to the Jeep but his leg being in bad shape. Wes manages to get a tourniquet on it though Shaun passes out in the process. Wes notices a tall hill on the other side of the huge clearing where they are stranded, and decides to try to get to the top to see if he can get a signal on the cell phone. He successfully climbs to the top, but is unable to get a signal. The bear comes up behind him, and Wes quickly climbs back down and runs back across the clearing to the others. He makes it back to the car where Lauren has managed to move Shaun into the back seat. He and Lauren quickly get in the vehicle, but of course they have no way to get it going.

The bear arrives and climbs on the Jeep, smashing in the roof, then jumps down and starts slamming into the side, eventually overturning it. After a final roar, it leaves and night falls. Shaun wakes up and tells them about the bear trap he saw at the buildings he found. He cries about wanting to go home, then dies. Wes and Lauren load him into the Jeep, then start pushing it down hill to get it moving. Using the momentum, with occasional pushing sessions, they are able to get near the buildings.

Lauren heads to the buildings while Wes stays at the land rover. She finds the bear trap, but while exploring, the bear swings at her through a window, sending her back first onto to the trap. She manages to get up and heads back to the land rover, leaving the trap behind. She and Wes quickly get back in the car as the bear closes in. It rips off the tail gate and drags out Shaun's body, pulling it into the woods. Wes gets out and grabs a can of gasoline, pouring a trail from the back of the Jeep to the woods. He yells at Lauren to get in the front of the car, then starts banging on the roof and yelling for the bear to come get him. She arrives and starts trying to get in the back of the Jeep. Wes sets the path of gasoline on fire as Lauren flees the vehicle. The Jeep partially explodes, but the bear ends up unharmed.

Wes tells Lauren to run while he distracts it with his bloody clothes. They run off in separate directions and he starts calling the bear again. He strips out of his bloody clothes and climbs a tree to wait. The bear finds the clothes on the ground, but Wes accidentally drops the tire iron he was holding, letting the bear know exactly where he was. The bear shakes him out of the tree, and Wes hobbles for the buildings where Lauren has been working on a trap. Lauren calls out to the bear from another building and lures it inside, where she climbs up to the roof and jumps down, triggering the front door to close behind the bear trapping it inside. Wes and Lauren celebrate and start to leave. The bear rips down the door, and they run, but Wes falls. Lauren comes back for him and refuses to leave him behind as the bear charges at them. The grizzly kills them both.
