Gritos en la noche ("Screams in the Night") (1961) AKA The Awful Dr. Orloff was an early horror film of cult director Jess Franco. It stars Howard Vernon as the mad Dr. Orloff ( or sometimes Orlof) who wants to repair his disfigured daughter's face with skin grafts from others. It is reminiscent of Eyes Without a Face, made in 1960.
Helped by a freakish assistant named Morpho (Ricardo Valle), Orlof kidnaps several women including Dany (Maria Silva), a cabaret singer whose forgotten necklace is the clue which leads dedicated Inspector Edgar Tanner (Conrado San Martin) onto Orlof's trail. Using girlfriend Wanda Bronsky (Diana Lorys who also played the daughter) as an undercover spy, Tanner lures Orlof into a trap, but the risks are greater than he imagines. This film spawned several sequels (El Secreto del Dr. Orloff (1964), Miss Muerte (1966), El Enigma del ataúd (1969), La vie amoureuse de l'homme invisible (1971), Los ojos siniestros del doctor Orloff (1973) and El Siniestro doctor Orloff (1982)) as well as influencing many others. Franco was still using the characters of Orloff and Morpho in the late 1980's.
