Gristede's (also spelled Gristedes, as used in the company's logo) is a New York City based chain of small supermarkets. Gristede's serves a mostly urban customer base due to its location.
[edit] History
The first Gristede's [gruh-STEE-deez] was founded by brothers Dietrich (Dick) and Charles Gristede in 1888. At the height of the company there were locations throughout NYC, as well as Westchester County and Connecticut.
The Gristedes brothers sold the company to the Southland Corporation in 1969. In 1986 the Southland Corporation was acquired by the Red Apple Group, which is still the parent company of Gristede's.
[edit] Locations
The vast majority of Gristede's locations are currently found within the New York City borough of Manhattan. There are four Gristede's locations currently outside of Manhattan: Brooklyn; Pelham Manor, Scarsdale , Westchester County; and Locust Valley, New York.
