Grindheim
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Grindheim is a former municipality in Vest-Agder county, Norway.
It was created by the split of Bjelland og Grindum municipality on January 1, 1902. At that time Grindheim had a population of 909.
On 1 January 1964 Grindheim was merged with Konsmo and the districts of Ågedal and Midtbø in Bjelland to create the new municipality Audnedal. Before the merger Grindheim had a population of 701.
[edit] The name
The municipality (originally the parish) was named after the farm Grindheim (Old Norse Grindheimr), since the first church was built there. The first element is grind f 'gate, wicket' (or maybe *grind f 'sand, gravel'), the last element is heimr m 'home, homestead, farm'.
Until 1889 the name was written Grindem, in the period 1889-1917 Grindum, from 1918 on Grindheim.
