[edit] Criteria for being a main station
What criteria are you using to define a station as "main"? Road Wizard 19:41, 3 June 2006 (UTC)
Sorry, i am just basing it partially on usage figures, whether it is a junction between various lines or even other systems, interchange, historical significance (Edge Hill in the other template as an example), where it serves and general size of the station. I may have other reasons, as with the case of Hooton. In the Liverpool template, Hooton was added as it is a major Park and Ride interchange. If you feel some stations should be removed, go ahead within reason. Also, i welcome changes and additions to the template. What would you say would be main? Simply south 19:48, 3 June 2006 (UTC)
- No need to apologise, I just find it is easier to define criteria at an early stage in order to avoid disputes later on. I will begin a list in the subsection below, this will aid both discussion on what should be included and help editors involved in disputes in the future. Please let me know what you think of the suggested criteria. Road Wizard 20:08, 3 June 2006 (UTC)
I have added some of your latest suggestions (marked with a +) to the tentatively agreed list below. I think we need to more clearly define what an "important building" is and how close it needs to be to the station before that becomes part of the criteria. For example, some might say a small hospital is important or a town council building or a shopping complex. The remaining criteria about an important historical site I am not too sure about - if the station no longer meets the other criteria in its present form I don't think it can be considered "main". Perhaps a way to resolve the situation is to have a sub-section of the template for former main stations in Greater Manchester? Road Wizard 20:54, 3 June 2006 (UTC)
As you know, Oxford Road and Salford Crescent are near large universities and in both cases there is more than one university. I suppose it must be based on more than one to fit the bill. These are bother also major interchanges between routes. I know they serve other criteria so they are okay Simply south 21:04, 3 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] List of Criteria
This is a list of suggested criteria for deciding whether a station is a "main" one. Please discuss changes in the section above.
- Usage figures show that more than x amount of people use the station
- The station serves both local commuter and national express trains
- The station has x number of platforms in regular operation
- The station is at a junction (passengers can change there for different lines) +
- The station is a major transport interchange
- The station is a terminus for at least one line +
- The station is located in a city centre +
If a station meets any two of the above criteria it can be considered "main".

I know Manchester Victoria fits two of them, but see what you have put on the discusion page of that station with me. I am partially basing my criteria on that. I think other reasons should be included. I am going to list my criteria. Easier to read than what i have put in my paragraph. I do agree with your criteria but i think there should be additions to it. Simply south 20:27, 3 June 2006 (UTC)
- Usage figures at a station
- Termini
- Important buildings nearby (for example, university)
- Junction or Interchange
- Important historical site with reference to the railways maybe
- No of platforms
- Location in a city centre
I suppose another i consider and base on is
- destination
-
- I've added Wigan Wallgate, Wigan NW and Bolton as I was fairly sure that they will meet anybody's criteria of a major station, and I removed Oldham Werneth as it's not even the second most important station in the borough (Shaw & Crompton is far busier if I remember).
- I'm not convinced by separating Salford's stations - it doubles the size of the template, and neither station is as important as Stockport, Wigan NW or Bolton. Just some thoughts! Aquilina 10:14, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Redirect
I decided to be bold and change this to redirect to Template:Greater Manchester railway stations. I've created similar templates for Merseyside, the West Midlands and West Yorkshire. It avoids the difficulty of deciding what constitutes a "major" station. --RFBailey 19:34, 1 July 2006 (UTC)
