This is an image of the Doppler radar wind velocities in the Greensburg, Kansas tornado on May 4, 2007. Image from the National Weather Service Weather Forecast Office in Dodge City, Kansas. Greens and blues represent winds blowing towards the radar, and reds and pinks represent winds blowing away from the radar. Notice the area to the south and west of Greensburg, where the blue colors (representing high wind velocity towards the radar) are right next to the pink and orange colors (representing high wind velocity away from the radar.) This is a particularly strong instance of what is known as a "couplet" and shows where a mesocyclone has formed in a supercell.
