Grey Highlands, Ontario

Grey Highlands is a municipality in Grey County, Ontario, Canada.

Grey Highlands was formed as a Municipality on January 1, 2001 with the amalgamation of the Village of Markdale and the Townships of Artemesia, Euphrasia and Osprey. The former Village of Flesherton is also located within the municipality, having been amalgamated with Artemesia Township in 1998.

According to the 2006 Census, the Municipality covers a land area of 880.6 square kilometres and has a population of 10,000. Natural features include the Niagara Escarpment, which passes through the municipality. The Bruce Trail, a popular hiking and multi-use trail, follows the escarpment. The Beaver Valley, north of Flesherton, is home to a number of downhill ski slopes.The Municipality of Grey Highlands is also made up of several small villages and hamlets including Eugenia, Ceylon, Maxwell, Singhampton, Priceville, Kimberley, and Feversham. Visit the second highest waterfall in Ontario, at 23 metres, Eugenia is also the location of Grey County's only Gold Rush. The Beaver Valley, in the heart of Grey Highlands was created during the last glacial ice age, which carved ou this beautiful steep sided and broad valley. Designated as a World Biosphere by Unesco, the area provides some of the most beautiful scenery found anywhere year round. The Municipality of Grey Highlands is located 2 hours north of Toronto. Grey Highlands Secondary School (Gr. 9 - 12)serves the area and is located in the Flesherton community. MacPhail Memorial Elementary School (Gr. K-8) serves the Flesherton area aswell. Osprey Central School (Gr. K-8) serves the Maxwell, Feversham area. Beavercrest Community School (Gr. K-8) serves the Markdale and surrounding area.
