Gregory Charles Rivers (Chinese: 河國榮, Cantonese: Ho Kwok Wing, pinyin: He Guorong), (born 1965) is a Hong Kong actor of Australian heritage.
Growing up in Katoomba, he moved to Hong Kong before finishing his medicine degree at the University of New South Wales. Speaking fluent Cantonese, he is currently a TVB actor. Practically every major character who is a foreigner (no matter whether a French or English man) in TVB dramas is played by him. He has also appeared on stage, as protagonist, in 2005. The Aussies often say that in Hong Kong, he's found America.
His Chinese name is made up of the Chinese equivalent of his surname Rivers (河) and the name of his idol Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing (張國榮).
He is an active member of the Mac circle in Hong Kong, and a popular blogger.
He also a frequent Youtube poster, having his own prolific number of video clips of himself and his many colleagues within the Hong Kong media industry[citation needed]
In a TV interview aired on the 19th of March 2007 on the Hong Kong Terrestrial channel TVB, Gregory River mentioned his reason for learning Cantonese was his association with Hong Kong Cantonese speaking friends during his time at university at the age of 20years old. It was this close friendship which led him to become more interested in the learning the language when he first heard the songs sung by Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing inspiring him to learn the words so he could sing it. At the age of 21years old, he dropped out of university of New South Wales where he was studying a medical degree, which he was on his 2nd year from his final to travel to Hong Kong, citing that he dropped the degree because he had lost interest in it and not because he had any difficulty.[citation needed]
[edit] Trivia
Speaking in one of his YouTube videos, Gregory River mentioned during his time at New South Wales University, he worked as a part-time cleaner in the Round House and Square House.[citation needed]
As mentioned on his blog, he has left TVB as of Janurary 2008.
He is now the English tutor of actor Chow Yun Fat in the movie 'Dragonball'
