He joined the band in 1985 as a partner to steel string guitarist Nick Webb to work on the band's first major release, Red Dust And Spanish Lace and has been at the forefront of the band ever since.
Following the loss of Webb to pancreatic cancer in 1998, Carmichael spent some time regrouping and decided to continue with the band, calling upon another steel string guitarist, Miles Gilderdale, as a new performing and songwriting partner.
