Greenport is a village in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 2,048 at the 2000 census.
The Village of Greenport is located in the Town of Southold and is the only incorporated village in the town.
Greenport is a major port city for its area, having developed strong fishing and whaling industry. More recently the tourism industry has grown substantially too, especially in the warm summer months. This is due in part to Greenport being a three way link for travelers taking the Long Island Expressway towards New York, crossing Shelter Island to Sag Harbor, or riding Cross Sound Ferry to New England.

[edit] History
The village was previously called Winter Harbor, Stirling, and Green Hill and was incorporated in 1838. Greenport was once a whaling and ship building village, and, since 1844, has been the eastern terminal station on the north fork for the Long Island Rail Road.
[edit] Police department disbanded
In a rare move, the residents of Greenport voted 617-339 on Nov. 15, 1994 to disband their nine-member police department, a move that became effective at 1500 hours on Nov. 17, 1994. The department, which was established in 1947, was shut down following a grand jury investigation into a series of scandals. Since the shutdown, police services have been provided by the Southold Town Police Department, New York State Police and the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office.

Most of the tourism comes from boaters and summer home owners, although people from the rest of Long Island go there as well. All go for the great small town feeling, with many different shops, ice cream parlors, and restaurants.
