Greene County is a county located in the U.S. state of Illinois. As of 2000, the population is 14,761. Its county seat is Carrollton, Illinois[1].

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 546 square miles (1,415 km²), of which, 543 square miles (1,407 km²) of it is land and 3 square miles (8 km²) of it (0.59%) is water.

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 14,761 people, 5,757 households, and 4,075 families residing in the county. The population density was 27 people per square mile (10/km²). There were 6,332 housing units at an average density of 12 per square mile (4/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 98.06% White, 0.75% Black or African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.22% from other races, and 0.60% from two or more races. 0.52% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 29.2% were of German, 27.6% American, 14.3% English and 10.2% Irish ancestry according to Census 2000. 98.4% spoke English as their first language.

There were 5,757 households out of which 32.50% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.00% were married couples living together, 9.20% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.20% were non-families. 25.70% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.10% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.00.

In the county the population was spread out with 25.50% under the age of 18, 8.80% from 18 to 24, 26.40% from 25 to 44, 21.80% from 45 to 64, and 17.50% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 96.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $31,754, and the median income for a family was $37,057. Males had a median income of $30,067 versus $20,269 for females. The per capita income for the county was $15,246. About 10.10% of families and 12.40% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.80% of those under age 18 and 9.10% of those age 65 or over.
