Green Tree Mall is a shopping mall located in Clarksville, Indiana, a suburb of Louisville, Kentucky. The mall is located off of I-65 about four miles (6 km) north of downtown Louisville. It has a total area of 795,382 square feet (73,893 m²).[1][2] It was named for a large boundary tree of considerable age that once stood at the location.[3]

[edit] History
Built in 1968 along what was then McCulloch Pike, on ground that had for years been a cornfield, it became the catalyst for Clarksville's northern growth, as developers saw building at Green Tree and the surrounding area preferable than building two different stores in New Albany and Jeffersonville.
JCPenney and Sears were the initial anchor stores, with the mall laying entirely between the two stores. A 5 & 10, Danners, was also a prominent initial draw. JCPenney and Sears are still at their original locations, and Dillard's anchors the back annex. This Dillard's was originally Ben Snyder's and later Hess's. The main entrance was built in 1980 during a 22,000 sq ft (2,000 m²). expansion on the mall. The first Texas Roadhouse opened in 1993 at the mall and is still located at the mall.[4] A food court was originally in the back annex, but it was never popular, and the area became a part of Dillard's; some of this area still remains unoccupied.[5]
The mall is owned by Santa Monica, California company Macerich. Macerich acquired the property in 1975 and acquired the Green Tree East area in 1989.
[edit] Community involvement
Green Tree Mall plays host to Club Mom, a children's entertainment event, on the first Tuesday of every month. The mall also hosts Club Mallwalker health screenings on the second Wednesday of every month. In addition to its club events, the mall has two yearly events: Kids Day, which is similar to a large Club Mom, and Friends & Family, for which local schools sell discount tickets to various tenants in the mall; the schools receive all the profit from ticket sales.
In 2007, the mall was set to host the first Kentucky Derby Festival event in Indiana with the U.S. Bank Derby Festival Great Balloonfest, but it was canceled due to poor weather.[6][7]
Green Tree Mall staff even developed a green thumb in spring of 2007. They earned a grant through the Macerich Louise Marquez special event grants that provided them with funds to purchase plants for the renovation of Bob Hedge Park in Jeffersonville, Indiana. The park is specially designed for children that are handicapped.[8] Staff also participate in cooking at the Ronald McDonald House in Louisville as well as working with other organizations such as the Salvation Army and Goodwill Industries.
[edit] Dillard's expansion
River Falls Mall, another shopping center, opened across the street in 1990. When Bacon's, one of River Falls' original anchors, was acquired by Dillard's, Dillard's moved its men's department to the former Bacon's, while keeping the women's department at Green Tree Mall. In 2004, Dillard's closed the men's store at River Falls Mall as that mall declined, and returned the men's department to the Green Tree store, making that store a full-line Dillard's once more. Dillard's expanded its location to become the largest single floor Dillard's store and they completed their expansion of 60,000 sq ft (6,000 m²) in March 2005.[5]
