Green Power

Green Power[1] is a Hong Kong-based non-governmental organization (NGO) which concern about the city's environmental issue. The NGO was founded in 1988 by a group of dedicated volunteers. It made environmental education as its foremost priority.

Green Power established the first ever Green Schools Network in Hong Kong, to encourage environmental education in cooperation with schools. It works closely with teachers to promote and foster green awareness in young children. Three onsite Environmental Resource Centres have been established in secondary and primary schools.

[edit] Environmental Resources Centres

The Tsuen Wan Environmental Resources Centre and Wan Chai Environmental Resources Centre were established by Envirnomental Protection Department, and have been managed by Green Power since 2000 and 2006, respectively. The centres provide the public with environmental information and reading materials, and guided visit services. They serve as bases for spreading environmental protection messages through the community.

Green Power Hike is the largest race along the 50-km Hong Kong Trail. It is an annual charitable walkathon for Green Power. It was first held in 1994 and was only a hundred participations joined. In the past 14 years, more than 28,000 people have participated in the Green Power Hike, raising more than HK$26 million to help realize a green future.In 2008, it mobilized around 3,000 participants to walk for a green cause and raised more than HK$4,000,000 donations. All donations will be used to fund local green education in kindergartens, primary and secondary schools.
