Greek kyrios

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Greek kyrios was the head of a home, household, or in Greek terminology, the Oikos. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oikos)

The kyrios was always male, and was a recognized citizen. A woman had to appeal to a male member of her family typically - be it cousin, uncle, father, to represent her in all Greek affairs. If a woman was married, her husband was her kyrios.

Those affairs included in court, in business, and in finance. Since women could not own land, the kyrios had to own the land for her.

Of further note, a Greek kyrios was required of all widows who may have lost their husband.
