Greek National Road 3

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Greece National Road 3 is a highway that is the old national road (Ethniki Odos) from Eleusis to Larissa, and near Tyrnavos to Elassona and the new national road up to the border with the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia near Niki and links with the M3. It is also E65 north of Larissa. In the late 1980s, the highway opened a bypass of Tyrnavos and Elassonas. It is one of the longest highways in Greece. It has been bypassed by Greek National Road 1 since the 1960s up to Larissa. It used to serve as a highway to Thessaloniki with the same route up to Larissa.

There had been some farmers' protests against low prices as they spilled milk on this highway in 2003. It lasted for a couple of days and tractors blocked the entire highway.

[edit] Future developments

In 2002, a future superhighway linking Larissa, Kozani and Niki and to Bitola in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia began construction, the date of opening is not yet confirmed and could be open as early as the late-2000s. The construction is presently north of Larissa and from the bridge of the Haliacmon River north to Niki. It is presently unpaved and bridges have not yet been constructed as well as within Kozani with a few interchanges.
