[edit] New Greater St. Louis Counties

As of now, four new counties have entered the St. Louis Area, one in Missouri (Washington), and three in Illinois (Bond, Calhoun, and Macoupin). Although the population of all four of the new counties are much smaller than the rest of the existing counties in the St. Louis Metro Area, they are growing much faster than the other counties-- for example, in Washington County, Missouri, the employment rate grew 66.7% between 1990 to 1999, so these counties may still be small, they will not be in 5-15 years time. Calhoun County, in Illinois, has the smallest population among the new counties in the Greater St. Louis.
