[edit] History
On May 19, 1932 the citizens of Peoria voted to have an airport. On 195 acres (0.8 km²), American Airways (American Airlines) and Chicago and Southern Airlines brought in airmail and passenger service on 4 shale-surfaced runways. The land was purchased by 261 Peoria businessmen that formed the Peoria Airport, Inc. Today Greater Peoria Regional Airport is served by 5 airlines. Most of the airlines don't offer large jet service. Allegiant Air is the only airline to offer larger jets. Northwest Airlink, Delta Connection, United Express and American Eagle offer flights in smaller regional jets. On April 25, 2007 the Greater Peoria Airport Authority announced a new 9 gate terminal will be built and that the older terminal will be demolished. Construction of the new terminal is scheduled to begin in 2008.
