The "Greater Liverpool" area is an unofficial term associating the city of Liverpool with its hinterland.
Greater Liverpool is not to be confused with Greater Merseyside or Liverpool City Region. The term is so named as it is perceived by many that the City Council boundaries of Liverpool are outdated and should include suburbs of south Sefton and Knowsley. While many of the two boroughs towns and districts are independent of Liverpool, such as Bootle, Maghull, Crosby, Kirkby and Huyton, they are also a modern 'overspill' of Liverpool and intrinsically linked to the city by their inhabitants.
In the L postcode area, this covers postcodes L1 to L36, as opposed to the City Region covering places such as St Helens and Halton.
Places that consolidate Greater Liverpool include Aintree Racecourse and the Port of Liverpool. While the new ground proposal for Everton F.C. is known as Destination Kirkby, promoted by the club who cite Kirkby's close proximatey to Goodison Park and Walton as factors in it's appeal.
The staunch independence of the areas mentioned and of the borough councils of Knowsley and Sefton, mean that any idea of an expansion of the city of Liverpool would be vehemently opposed and as such the idea would be a non-starter.
