Gran La Plata is located to the south of the Greater Buenos Aires agglomeration next to Rio de La Plata, in fact the two metropolitan areas have merged together.

[edit] History

The cities of Berisso and Ensenada existed before La Plata and were both candidates to form the capital of Buenos Aires Province when it was decided to separate Buenos Aires as an autonomous city. Eventually it was decided to create a new city to act as provincial capital and within a short period of time the two pre-existing towns were enveloped into the Gran La Plata conurbation.
