Greater Binghamton is the regional name given to the area of Broome County, New York and the surrounding area. According to the 2000 US Census, the Greater Binghamton Area (Binghamton MSA) has a population of 252,320. The Greater Binghamton name was adopted in the early 21st century to better identify the region with its most well-known city in efforts of marketing and external promotion.
Historically, the Greater Binghamton region has been known as the Triple Cities (Binghamton, Johnson City and Endicott, New York). Greater Binghamton is considered a part of the Southern Tier of New York State and lies on the southern border with Pennsylvania, approximately 70 miles south of Syracuse, New York.
