[edit] History
Opening in 1967, Greater Atlanta Christian School was started by Jesse Long, it had only 139 students on a two-lane road in rural Gwinnett County, Georgia, now known as Indian Trail. At first, buildings were scarce and students were few. As of 2007, the school has 1950 students, and 75 acres of facilities and green space that reflect a college university campus rather than a grade school.
The current campus now consists of an early childhood village, which is held in high regard, and is often mimicked at other schools. Also, a large co-joined Junior and Senior High building, an extensive elementary school, a fine arts center, home to the Clifton Jones theater, schools of dance, and band and orchestra programs and a Student-Family center. The school is home to 4 gyms, batting cages, a newly built weight center, a newly acquired aquatic center, multiple baseball, softball, lacrosse, and soccer fields, and a several hundred thousand square foot Forum is under construction, due to be finished in 2009.
Members of the class of 2007 were offered $90.9 million worth of scholarships and accepted to 140 colleges and universities. GAC One-Act Play casts have earned seventeen state titles. During the spring of 2007, 19 seniors were awarded athletic scholarships, and for the third time in 5 years, GAC was awarded the Georgia High School Association Dodge Director’s cup for best total athletic program.
With an intentional focus on world missions, over 200 GAC students travel each year to impoverished areas of the world in order to serve other children.
The current president of the school is Dr. David Fincher.
