The Monastery of Great Lavra (Greek: Μονή Μεγίστης Λαύρας) first monastery in Athos in southeast part of peninsula. It was was built in 963 by the monk Athanasius of Trebizond[1] with funds from Byzantine Emperor Nicephorus II Phocas who intended to abdicate his throne and become a monk before being assassinated in 969. Great Lavra is the oldest and largest monastery on Mount Athos in Greece, housing 362 monks in 2000. There are 37 chapels in the Great Lavra.

The Great Lavran library contains 2,046 Greek manuscripts, 165 codices, over 20,000 printed books, and about 100 manuscripts in other languages. 8 leaves from Codex Coislinianus (6th century).
