Great Coates

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Great Coates is a village and civil parish in North East Lincolnshire, England. According to the 2001 census it had a population of 1,111. It is to the north-west of the Grimsby urban area, and is served by Great Coates railway station.

Great Coates has a long history, with an entry in the Domesday Book. Its eastern boundary with Little Coates civil parish (which merged with Grimsby in 1928) was formed by the River Freshney and included the area that is now the Willows and Wybers Wood estates. In 1928 and 1958 parts of Great Coates parish were allocated to Grimsby, then in 1968 Great Coates village itself was absorbed, its civil parish council being abolished. Other parts were merged with Healing parish. The parish was re-established (excluding Willows and Wybers Wood) in April 2003. [1]

[edit] Conoco Stadium

Grimsby Town Football Club have had planning agreed by North East Lincolnshire Council for a new football stadium on the outskirts of the village, just within the Healing parish boundary. This has met opposition from local residents. In a poll conducted by the football club, 84% of North East Lincolnshire residents who voted, voted in favour of the project. In addition to the stadium the development will include a retail park to help finance the development.

The project name of the stadium is simply 'Conoco Stadium'. In 2002, Conoco merged with fellow oil giant Phillips and the company is now known as ConocoPhillips. There has been no comment or commitment of funds towards the project by ConocoPhillips since its formation. The stadium was first proposed during the late 1990s, and it was hoped that the stadium would be ready by August 2002. But a succession of obstacles have delayed the commencement of the stadium's construction, and with Grimsby currently in the Football League's lowest division there is currently little pressure for a new larger stadium.

[edit] Parish Council

2003 saw the re-election of nine candidates to form the new Great Coates Parish Council. The elected were Mrs Phyllis Butterworth, Mr Fred Tyson, Mrs Val Wynn, Mrs Ann Bagley, Mrs Nicola Maasdam, Mr Mark Barnes, Mr Geoff Heard, Mr Kevin Redgrift and Mr Ray Lawrance. 2007 un-contested election results see returning councillors as Mrs Phyllis Butterworth, Mrs Ann Bagley, Mrs Nicola Maasdam, Mr Geoff Heard, Mr Kevin Redgrift, and new councillors for this year being Mr Chris Dalton, Mrs Rose Kelly and Mr Richard Foster, with one vacancy.
