[edit] Archives by topic

I started a list of archives by topic. I suggest it be modeled after the WP:UBX topics. The main difference would be the actual lists would be of user names with links either to a page, e.g., Ashley Y or a section on a page, e.g., Miraluka. Rfrisbietalk 03:31, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

Very nice! —Mira 05:54, 8 June 2006 (UTC)
I've been trying to figure out which topics Disavian's various archives should go under, but it's just given me a headache. Could anyone else help out? —Mira 02:59, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
I've been separating them, and trying to get them to more closely match the list here. —Disavian (talk/contribs) 20:13, 13 June 2006 (UTC)
Okay, how's that for now? —Disavian (talk/contribs) 21:13, 13 June 2006 (UTC)
That looks great, thank you! —Mira 22:05, 13 June 2006 (UTC)
The way I reorganized my page, is to make sub-templates and include them into the main page. Make sense? Oddly enough, I had my religion page included in a Babel box on a couple people's userpages, when they were going for the "religion" userbox. How weird is that...? —Disavian (talk/contribs) 00:01, 14 June 2006 (UTC)
Heh, that's pretty funny. —Mira 02:04, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] My archive

I no longer wish to be involved in the whole userbox debate, but unfortunately, I have an archive of seven userboxes at User:Digitalme/Box/Archive. If someone would be willing to take over, and bypass the redirects on several of them (I already did this on {{User:Digitalme/Box/User wikipedia/Hope-Administrator}}, {{User:Digitalme/Box/User ancestry English}}, and {{User:Digitalme/Box/User Irish Ancestry}}, so these would need to be bypassed again. The other redirects have not been bypassed yet.) If you are willing to do this, then please do, no need to co-ordinate with me, unless you need help, and if you do this, please leave a message on my talk page when you are finished.--digital_me(TalkˑContribs) 01:11, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

Noting the fact that this request was completed in August by another user. GRBerry 15:36, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Rename?

We've renamed the Wikipedia: page. Should this be renamed as well? I'm currently thinking that since it is intended to be only temporary, there isn't a need to do so. If we all end up deciding that having a page like this is a good part of the English version of WP:GUS, we can handle it then. GRBerry 20:20, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

I renamed some of my stuff, but I can wait. :-) Rfrisbietalk 21:12, 13 June 2006 (UTC)
If this page is kept, then yes, it should be renamed. But I agree, we should decide if we want to keep it first. —Mira 22:06, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Keep permanantly?

It is time to resolve the question of whether we wish to keep this page permanantly. (Well, as permanant as anything on a wiki is.) It is being edited, on average, more than once a day over the past month. I read the discussion to date at Wikipedia:Userboxes/Userbox location straw poll#Centralized User namespace userbox directories as endorsing having at least one centralized directory in userspace. Personally, I think Rfrisbie's directories are more useful, but a measure of redundancy doesn't hurt. The frequent editing is further evidence for keeping this. If kept, I will move/rename it to conform to the "German Userbox solution" name. GRBerry 14:01, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

Well, I definitely believe in having a centralized userbox directory, but I don't feel it works very well as it is now. Currently, I need to browse through heaps of individual userbox archives on different user pages, and because not all focus on originals but try to keep an extensive list of all userboxes, I'm forced to view countless of duplications.
My proposal is this: The centralized directory have subpages of different types of userboxes (e.g. Languages, Life, Politics). On these subpages any user can add userboxes with the goal of creating the most extensive list of userboxes ever made. This would be a kind of centralized userbox archive, but on a separate subpage we could keep all links to individual userbox archives for those who still feel the need. The advantage of this solution is that userboxes will be much easier to find as they're all given equal focus and are universally gathered and sorted, and that users who create their own original userboxes are not required to create a personal userbox archive to show their userboxes to others. - Wintran (talk) 15:01, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
Does this directory User:Rfrisbie/Userboxes, and to take a lower level example that GUS has been fully implemented on User:Rfrisbie/Userboxes/Beliefs fit your description? (It is a userspace near-mirror of the directory structure formerly existing in the Wikipedia namespace.) If so, should we keep this page also or get rid of it? GRBerry 15:43, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
Oh, you're right, I believe it does. I didn't look at it carefully enough the first time I visited it. Then I see no reason how this page will help centralization (rather the opposite, as it might cause confusion). I'd also discourage the use of User:UBX/Userboxes/General Nav and instead create a navigator over Rfrisbie many subpages. - Wintran (talk) 16:10, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

Actually, I still see this page as the central directory. That's because we have differrent styles of directories. The one I use just mirrors the originals. Others enhance their pages with category information - maybe in their boxes, maybe not. I've always welcomed adding links to the pages I set up ("regardless of location"), adding many myself. They're probably out-of-date right now, but I also welcome "See also" links to related topical pages. Hopefully, this simplifies browsing to some extent, but I know not everyone links their boxes to those pages, for whatever reasons. If adding an invitation on this page to add links to the User:Rfrisbie/Userboxes directories helps, that's fine with me. I also support keeping this page and updating its name. Of course, I also like User:UBX/Userboxes/General Nav for the same reason I like this - it shows the diversity beyond one user's pages. Rfrisbietalk 16:22, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

p.s. I added an invitation to link individual userboxes to directories at User:Rfrisbie/Userboxes. Rfrisbietalk 21:01, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
I also added User:Rfrisbie/Userboxes/Nav to those directories. Rfrisbietalk 22:41, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
Nice job, I like it! - Wintran (talk) 22:49, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
I agree with Rfrisbie. I like seeing all the different pages. Plus, this page is a useful tool for updating User:UBX/Userboxes/General Nav. Where some people might find it difficult to find the correct place to add their directory to a template, it's easier to add to a list and let someone else add it to the template. (By the way, if there's a better place for User:UBX/Userboxes/General Nav, I'm perfectly open to moving it.) —Mira 19:46, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
I see what you mean, and I don't really dislike any of these pages at all. The problem is that we cause division among the userbox community if we don't strive for centralization. I think the community needs one central repository, that it can work on together. We can only encourage people into using it, and should not really discourage alternatives from appearing. In fact, I believe we can take inspiration from alternative solutions to improve the central archive further. Please don't take my word too seriously, I'm only speaking from my own experience, and the hard time I had finding userboxes I liked because I had no idea where to start looking. I also felt frustration over having to go through heaps of individual archives that included the same userboxes over and over again. - Wintran (talk) 19:51, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

Okay, time's up. Keep permanently and change the name! Rfrisbietalk 21:32, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

Alright, I agree :) But I still think the community should focus on a central repository, such as Rfrisbie's, and try to make it the most complete userbox archive together. If you think his layout/sorting is bad, let's discuss other solutions at his userbox talk page. If you have arguments against the whole concept of a central repository, please discuss it...somewhere...as well (and let me know about it! ;) - Wintran (talk) 01:14, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
Agreed. I'll move it when I have time to bypass 116+ redirects. The way work is going, I don't know when that will be. I have to take a redeye out of the country Saturday night, so it probably won't be for a couple weeks at a minimum. Maybe I should get and learn how to use AWB. Planned new page name is User:GRBerry/German Userbox Solution. GRBerry 17:11, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
Cool! If you want to move the page, I'll use AWB to bypass the redirects (if no one else beats me to it).

Rfrisbietalk 17:27, 2 August 2006 (UTC) By the way, Wikipedia:German userbox solution uses wikicapitalization. Would you consider using "User:GRBerry/German userbox solution"? Rfrisbietalk 17:31, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

Yes, I'll use wikicapitalization, and count on you or someone else to bypass the redirects. The talk page has two things pointing at it, all the rest are to the user page. GRBerry 17:41, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
Okay, I'll keep an eye out for the move. Rfrisbietalk 18:59, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
And what was the title of the talk page you put that comment on? You missed it. ;) GRBerry 19:42, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
Huh???!!!

[edit] Political party userboxes

Could somone make userboxes for the main 3rd parties in the United States? Constitution Party, Green Party, Libertarian Party, and Reform Party --Ted-m 23:46, 26 July 2006 (UTC) (Forwarded from my userpage. Rfrisbietalk 23:57, 26 July 2006 (UTC))

[edit] Userboxes needed (previously deleted Babelboxes)

I lack the coding skills to re-create some language boxes that were officially deleted; since you appear to be a userbox expert, I thought you would be the best person to ask. Specifically, I would like to show professional fluency (level 5) in Swedish, Norwegian and Danish: if I supplied the foreign text, would you please handle the other aspects? I'd appreciate that very, very much... --Ingeborg S. Nordén 21:25, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Soror/Frat userboxes

Should there be a seperate category for Sorority and Fraternity userboxes, or should they just be put under education? -Elizabennet 18:16, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

I'd just put them under education here. If you're interested, you also could add them at User:Rfrisbie/Userboxes/Education#Fraternities & Sororities. Rfrisbietalk 22:12, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Where should I put my own Userboxes?

Hi mate , I need to know which categories I should add my own created userboxes in. They are:

Unitedroad 19:48, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

Having them at my User space is not a big issue right? Unitedroad 19:51, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

Nope, no big issue to have them in your userspace. Rfisbie's directories are open to the inclusion of new individual userboxes. If you have enough on a common theme to create your own directory, then you can also do that and link the directory here.. See User:Rfrisbie/Userboxes and the associated sub-pages. Some other directories might be open for you to include there also; I'm not really following such conversations now. GRBerry 21:37, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] We've Moved...Again

To Wikipedia:Userbox migration, so should we move this page too (again)? Or should we keep it here? And I do think we should keep it as a centralized directory of userbox archives. -Royalguard11(Talk·Desk) 00:32, 7 October 2006 (UTC)

I don't mind if this gets moved to conform to that new name, but give it a few days to make sure that move sticks. Oh yeah, and as before, I want someone with AWB to bypass redirects. Anyone want to volunteer this time? GRBerry 02:31, 7 October 2006 (UTC)
I'm on Mac=no AWB. So I can't do it. -Royalguard11(Talk·Desk) 02:05, 8 October 2006 (UTC)
I changed the name and bypassed most "primary" redirects. I ignored most talk pages and transcluded links from Miraluka's nav template, etc. Let me know if something else just has to be redirected. Rfrisbietalk 20:02, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] I'm confused

I'm confused about how these work. If I want to add a user box to my page do I just copy and paste the code next to the image? And why is it that next to each topic is a list of people? IS this simply the person who made them?--Llama ruler 05:01, 8 April 2007 (UTC)
