[edit] Meditteranean Climate? Please!
Yes, it has wetter winters than summers, but 100" of rain a year NEVER qualifies as a Meditteranean Climate. Those climates are mostly dry (like Los Angeles, a classic example), not mostly wet. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 63.231.60.142 (talk) 05:10, 10 March 2007 (UTC).
[edit] Disambiguation, historical expertise needed!
Grand Ronde (the CDP, this article) and the Grande Ronde River Valley are about as far apart as two places can be in Oregon. Natives of the Grande Ronde Valley, as I understand it, were of critical importance to travelers of the Oregon Trail, who traded cattle and horses with them and relied on their knowledge of local geography. Is there any connections between those people and the present inhabitants of Grand Ronde, Oregon? This issue needs to be dealt with, especially on this page, which is where Grand Ronde redirects to. -Pete 06:37, 6 June 2007 (UTC)
- Never fear, I just made two disambiguation pages and will put disambig notices at the top of the articles and remove the see alsos. Good old OGN says, long story short:
- The French words "Grande Ronde" together mean generically a fine, large valley surrounded by hills, and two such places were named such by French Canadian trappers in Oregon. No connection other than the French kind. "Grand Ronde" without the "e" is a misspelling that has unfortunately stuck. Katr67 07:09, 6 June 2007 (UTC)
- You - and the Magic Book, of course - have once again made my day. Nice job. A suggestion, though: I would rather see a single disambiguation page, that clarifies that one spelling applies to one region/valley, and the other to the other. That information is not apparent in the current structure…you'd have to be paying very close attention to pick up on it; the idea that the "Grand Ronde" page has a See Also pointing at "Grande Ronde" will likely be confusing to most readers. Not everyone has that eagle eye for minor differences in spelling! (Though I sure wish more did.) Anyway, many thanks! -Pete 07:46, 6 June 2007 (UTC)
- P.s. Once again, I have massive regrets for not having a hi-res camera on hand for highway signs…the signs at the rest area on I-84 on the western edge of the valley have lots of good info, but my silly little brain can only remember so much.
- You are right about the level of detail needed to see that pesky extra "e", of course, and just so you know, that see also section in Grande Ronde River was my early ham-handed attempt at a disambiguation so I figure it was my job to clean up. Thank you for paying attention! Anyway, I thought about putting the two disambig pages together, but wasn't sure which should redirect to the other...and absolutely there should be an explanation about the geography but I didn't want to promise one more thing I probably wouldn't deliver for a while. Feel free to tweak the mess as you see fit. I did check USGS and it seems Oregon really is the only place with things named Grand(e) Ronde so that makes it easier.
