[edit] 2008 Valedictorian controversy

In May of 2008, Grapevine High School student Anjali Datta was denied valedictorian status by the Grapevine-Colleyville school district despite earning a record GPA of 5.898 because ISD board policy was worded to only allow the honor to be distributed to those who finished school in four years - Datta completed three. [1] The school system instead created a new honor title and declared her “Valedictorian—three-year Graduate.” She was also denied the “Highest Ranking High School Graduate” certificate, due to her not having been awarded the title of "Valedictorian", according to Principal Dr. Jerry D. Hollingsworth. [2] This move prevented Datta from receiving a one-year college scholarship from the state for college. [3]
