[edit] Club career
[edit] Early career
Brebner was born in Edinburgh, but started his career in 1994 with English giants Manchester United, shortly before turning seventeen. After four years, Brebner was loaned to Cambridge United, where he scored his first senior goal while making six appearances. A further loan spell was spent back in Edinburgh at Hibernian, where Brebner suffered relegation. He was then transferred to Reading, without making a single appearance for Manchester United, where he managed an impressive eleven goals from 46 appearances.

After this, Brebner returned to Hibernian on a permanent deal, and scored a hat-trick against eventual employers Dundee United in a Scottish Cup match in January 2003. Brebner moved on loan again to Stockport County, before arriving at Tannadice on 26 August 2004.
Brebner missed just three matches in his first season, after joining four games into the start of the season, and scored seven times from 64 appearances for United. However, following a change in management at the club, Brebner was informed by his new manager Craig Brewster in April 2006 that he would be allowed to leave the club at the end of the current season.[1] On 26 May 2006, Brebner was reported to be attracting interest from Australian A-League side Melbourne Victory,[2] and by 12 June 2006 had flown out for talks with the Melbourne-based club.[3]
[edit] Melbourne Victory
On 18 June 2006, Brebner came on as a trialist and scored for Victory with seconds remaining, in the QNI North Queensland Challenge Trophy game versus Central Coast Mariners. Securing a 2-2 draw, Brebner then scored the winning penalty to seal a 4-2 shoot-out win. On Brebner's performance, Victory manager Ernie Merrick said: "There's not too much more you can do when you're on trial than come in and win the game, is there?".[4] In Victory's second match on 20 June 2006, Brebner completed the full 90 minutes, playing in a 3-1 win over Chinese team Changchun Yatai. Brebner completed a successful trial period by netting a 28-yard free-kick as Victory won the trophy with a 6-1 win over the Chinese team in the final, on 24 June 2006.
On 4 July 2006 it was announced that on the back of his impressive displays during his trial, Brebner had been signed to a full-time contract with the Melbourne Victory, having agreed on a deal to be released from his Dundee United contract. He has settled in very well at his new Australian home, scoring his first home and away goal in the Round 12 fixture against Perth Glory with a long range shot from outside the box. In his first season he has helped the Victory to sew up the 2006-07 A-League premiership with five rounds remaining. The round 19 clash with Perth Glory away at Members Equity Stadium saw Brebner take the captain's armband for the first time in the absence of regular captain Kevin Muscat and vice-captain Archie Thompson.
