[edit] Production
The film marks the fourth collaboration between director Wilson Yip and Donnie Yen after 2007's Flash Point. The film also reunites Yip and Yen with Simon Yam after 2005's SPL: Sha Po Lang.
Production began in March 2008, and is expected to wrap up in June. 90% of the film will focus on events surrounding Yip Man that took place in Foshan between the 1930s to 1940s. Since the buildings in today's Foshan are architecturally different from the ones in the past, the filmmakers decided to shoot the film in Shanghai instead.[2]
To prepare for the role, Donnie Yen went on a diet, which consisted of mainly vegetables, in hopes of portraying an erudite and cultured Yip Man, as well as bringing out the special traits of Wing Chun.[3]
[edit] Fight Choreography
The martial arts scenes will be choreographed by Sammo Hung, who will not appear in the film. When asked how he would work with star Donnie Yen to direct the action scenes, Hung replied matter-of-factly, "With my mouth."[4]
