The Supreme Tribunal of Spain on date July 3rd 1979, ruled that the Spanish government must admit the Grande Oriente Español to be listed as a Legal Association, and this finally happened on October 18th 1980.
The Grand Lodge of Spain, was created on November 6th, 1982, on the country capital Madrid.
Masonry has been banned several times in the history of Spain. Last time it was banned was at the end of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), and the masonic activity was resumed once the democracy returned to Spain with the death of Francisco Franco.
The actual Grand Lodge of Spain headquarters are in Barcelona.

Is the only regularly recognized Grand Lodge of Spain.

It is organized in six, Masonic Provinces, each one with its own Provincial Grand Lodge:
- Provincial Grand Lodge of Andalucia
- Provincial Grand Lodge of Baleares
- Provincial Grand Lodge of Canarias
- Provincial Grand Lodge of Castilla
- Provincial Grand Lodge of Cataluña
- Provincial Grand Lodge of Valencia
There are 140 active lodges, depending of the Grand Lodge of Spain.
