Graham Cardwell
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Graham Cardwell (b. 1953) was an assistant dockmaster at Immingham, North Lincolnshire who, in September 1998, faked his own death. An extensive air and sea search was conducted following the discovery of a lifejacket and helmet belonging to Graham on mud flats of the docks of Immingham Port. It was eventually presumed by rescue teams to have been carried out to sea while carrying out routine checks of the dockyards.
However, after receiving information from an anonymous informant, he was found by police after living for eight months under an assumed identity in the West Midlands. Cardwell, who had told officers he had been suffering from depression and believed he was dying from cancer, apparently chose to stage his death to prevent his family from learning of his condition.
Despite the time and money spent searching for Cardwell, police declined to press charges and have kept his location out of the press for the protection of the informant who tipped off police.
