GP Hall

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

GP (Graham Peter) Hall is an English guitarist, composer and improviser, who invented the music genre known as 'Industrial Sound Sculptures'.

Hall's music draws on rock, jazz, flamenco, folk, blues, free music, electronic noise and "found" instrumentation, amongst others. He uses slide and fingerpicking techniques but also plays his guitars with various found implements such as crocodile clips, palette knives, velcro strips, an antique psaltery bow, wind-up toy cars and others. He uses a variety of treatments and electronic effects pedals to further process his guitar output.

He refers to one of his main playing approaches as "Electronic Sound-Sculpture" - this involves creating a highly detailed and layered impressionistic sound piece by layering guitar sounds and signals created by a variety of standard and non-standard methods. The sound-sculptures can be melodic, amelodic or both.

Although his electric and electronic playing gains the most attention at concerts, Hall is also known for his particular virtuosity as an acoustic guitarist (on both steel-strung and gut/nylon strung instruments) and is an expert flamenco player.

Hall has released a succession of albums on a wide variety of both major & small labels.
